The storytellers from Sweden are back! On their fourth album, IV, Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet naturally picks up where III left off, but the band has clearly progressed. So don't expect a repetition of previous work, but rather a band that continues to evolve without abandoning its typical sound. Overall, IV is darker, more compelling, and even more aggressive than its two predecessors.
The opening intro Urberg, followed by the all-consuming Magma, already gives you an impression of what awaits you. The subsequent 10-minute track Strävan drags you upwards from the very first second on the uncontrollable thermal winds. In the middle section, we are allowed to catch our breath for a moment, only to be sucked further towards the icy mountain peaks. What remains is the breathtaking view, coupled with the immeasurably deep, jagged abyss. The band's cinematic character is further reinforced when Aska makes its entrance, for here too the Swedes manage to conjure up a cinematic backdrop from which the images seem to emerge before your eyes as if by magic. The unprecedented and unforgiving forces of the earth are masterfully interpreted musically. The track Karg could easily be an ode to the gods of doom Black Sabbath, but performed in the style of Sagor Som Leder Mot Slutet. After the intense Rot, the band closes the album with Dvala, allowing us a moment to catch our breath. But naturally, we put the album on again, because it is impossible to take this record in one sitting.
